Kirkby Stephen Station
This is the home of Stainmore Railway Company, a volunteer project to restore the station buildings, engines, rolling stock and railway.
The station is open at weekends usually free of charge except for special events. There is a buffet car, museum and shop. On special steam days you can ride in the carriages pulled by a resident steam engine. Full information is available on their website.
There is a very popular walk along the Northern Viaduct Trust (NVT) round which follows the old railway towards the north east with additional historical information in the platelayers huts, a leaflet is available at the Visitor Centre.
The NVT also look after the Smardale Viaduct where there is a nature reserve managed by Cumbria Wildlife Trust.
