Pendragon Castle
“Let Uther Pendragon do what he can, Eden will run where Eden ran.”
In the middle of Mallerstang valley are the romantic ruins of Pendragon Castle with its associations of legend with Uther Pendragon, King Arthurs father, who was killed with his 100 men as the well was poisoned by the Saxons. Like all good legends there is said to be a treasure protected by a black chicken ghost. It is said that Uther tried to divert the River Eden into a moat.
“Let Uther Pendragon do what he can,
Eden will run where Eden ran.”
As with any castle there is a long history of facts or fable. Lady Anne Clifford renovated the castle to its former glory as the largest keep in Britain before left to decay once again.
