Brough Castle
This castle was originally built by William Rufus II of England to defend the lands having moved the Scottish border from Rey Cross on Stainmore to the Solway Firth.
Naturally the Scottish was not too happy about this and there followed years of border conflict with the castle regularly being destroyed and rebuilt.
Known as the Roman Tower, Brough Castle is built on the site of the Roman Fort Verterae where it had protected the east to west Roman road. There are later additions by the Clifford family. The castle is in the hands of English Heritage with free entry and display boards for information.
There is also a display in Brough Parish Church of St Michael near the castle in Church Brough.
