Lammerside Castle

This mysterious ruin is known locally to be Castle Dolorous of Arthurian legend where the giant Tarquin, a giant, eats small boys.

Recent archaeological and historical research by Erik Matthews has demonstrated the history of a castle hewn out of Clifford lands by the Warcop family loyal to Richard III. They were eventually driven out by the Cliffords and Whartons when the Lancastrians came to the throne and moved to safety at Smardale Hall.  The Lammerside ruins are a very small part of the original 14th century estate. This castle may be visited on foot.
