Black Bull
A family run pub offering year round bed and breakfast accommodation, restaurant and bar stocked with traditional cask ales. There is an enclosed beer garden at the rear containing several unusual tables!
White Lion
A small community pub which welcomes (well behaved) dogs, walkers and bikers. Food is served from 11 am. to 3 in the afternoon but not in the evening. Customers are, however, welcome to take in their own food bought elsewhere which can be reheated. Plates, condiments and sauces are provided free of charge as long as drinks are bought from the bar. BT sport is currently shown and from 25 July 2014 the pub will also be showing SKY Sports.
The White Lion is one of the oldest buildings in Kirkby Stephen its name originating from the English Reformation. The north of England was a hot bed of Catholic recusants (those who refused to accept Henry VIII’s rejection of the Catholic Church) who, having attended the obligatory Protestant service, would head for an illegal Catholic Mass. The White Lion was the heraldic symbol of the Duke of Norfolk, one of the main recusants in the country, and was used to enable those who could not read to identify where the Mass was taking place. The recusants would leave the Church by the back steps (still there) and head for the White Lion, not to drink but to celebrate an illegal Catholic mass.
