Coast to Coast Fish and Chip Shop.

The Coast to Coast Fish and Chip shop is well known for the BBC film of the ‘Coast to Coast’ walk originally with Alfred Wainwright and more recently in 2008 when it returned with Julia Bradbury. It offers a take-away service along with a 20 seater restaurant.

It is open Thursday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays.

Sit in the relaxing coffee lounge and help yourself to delicious home-made cakes and freshly brewed coffee or sit outside in the tea garden enjoying a peaceful view of Kirkby Stephen’s Parish Church. If you are eagle eyed you can see the bullet holes in the Church wall made during the English Civil War.

Tucked away in Walton’s Yard through the arch from Market Square the Century Chinese offers both take-away and sit-in meals in its restaurant.

Mulberry Bush

Fully licensed Café/ Bistro open every day for breakfast, lunches and teas. All ingredients are locally sourced and fresh with homemade soups, cakes and scones. Vegetarians and coeliacs are catered for.

The Emporium

A combined delicatessen and coffee shop, located in a converted Catholic Church where Prince Charles attended one of the last services. The deli specialises in both local and international foods along with special dietary fare. The ‘Cheeky Bean’ café is incorporated into the Emporium serving coffee, sandwiches and cakes.

Horse Shoe Fish and Chip restaurant

A family run business for the last 50 years the Horse Shoe also provides freshly baked pizzas on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Open for 11.30 to 1.30 and 5 to 8 in the evenings. Closed on Tuesdays.

Pink Geranium

A family run café it is well known for its home- made, creative and unusual soups. It welcomes bikers and cyclists providing bottle filling and cycle ‘bits’ such as inner tubes! Background music is by local singer songwriter Kim Seymour.


Bakery offering bread, cakes and hot and cold savoury food. Takeaway sandwiches with choice of fillings and hot drinks.
